How to Pick a YWAM DTS: 5 Tips
With over 600 YWAM locations worldwide, it can be overwhelming to pick a DTS. Here are five steps to get you started.
Packing is stressful, annoying, eternal, confusing, overwhelming (throw in whatever word comes to mind). But here’s the thing, IT DOESN’T NEED TO BE! At least hopefully not with this lovely step by step “how to pack for DTS” list.
Step 1: Go through your list and make sure you’ve got all those things at home. If you don’t, plan a shopping day before you pack.
Step 2: Clear out a morning or afternoon for packing. Make that your priority during this time, get in the zoooone.
Step 3: Invite a friend or family member to help (body doubling anybody 👀)!
Step 4: Make a playlist or use this one.
Step 5: Get to packing!
Don’t you worry, here are all the lists you could possibly need… and if we missed one let us know in the chat cause we should probably add it.
Sports clothes
Work clothes (something you can get dirty)
Walking shoes
A nice outfit
Ladies: a long skirt for outreach (depending on where we go, this might not be required, but it's a good piece to bring along)
Guys: a nice church shirt (button-up) and lightweight pants for outreach
Bathing suit
Modest sleepwear (keep in mind that you will be living in a community house with shared rooms and bathrooms)
Bath towel, toiletries, and medications
House shoes/slippers
Musical instruments, sports equipment, or art supplies (optional)
Bible, journal, favorite pens!
Adapter: in Germany, we have a standard 220V European plug
Powerbank
Your phone: instead of an international phone plan, check out eSIMs. Airalo eSIM could also be a good option for you (5GB in Germany for 30 days is $15).
Bike: definitely not required, but you are welcome to bring your bike
Sleeping bag and mat (for outreach and in Germany)
Outreach extras: travel towel, flashlight, etc. (you can also buy/order these things in Nuremberg)
Keep your passport in the same place ALWAYS. That way you know where to find it at all times.
Packing cubes are nice if you like to stay really organized.
You can buy lotions, shampoos, conditioners, etc here! Save up on some space. Maybe do some research on if you can find specific brands here or not first.
Think “I’m packing for 2 or 3 weeks” not for 3 months. Washing machines are a thing and you are highly encouraged to use them 🤣
Are you a coffee lover? You might wanna bring your coffee gear (Aeropress, V60, etc)
Bring a hook (you never know when you wanna hang something up).
Medicine (needed prescription/over the counter preference).
Think layers (camis, t-shirts, cardigans, sweaters, jackets, etc).
Look into an eSim for your phone. Airalo is a good app for eSims.
Bring something from home, especially if you’re the sentimental type. (Photos, letters, favorite spice/sauce, game)
Earplugs
Adapter (outlet types C, E and F work in Germany)
Water bottle
Bible
Travel mug
Headphones
Notebook/something to take notes on
Favorite snack
Hair appliances (unless it's 220/240V)
Peanuts (cause allergies)
Too much (don’t over pack y’all)
So there you have it. How do you pack for DTS? You commit. Jump in with both feet. It's all or nothing baby. Get excited for what God has in store for you, hit play on those tunes, and go for it. Can’t wait to see you in Germany!!
Nothing gets us more excited than when someone finds their place in missions. There is so much opportunity and need for people to get involved.
